ANIMALS AND PLANTS

The plants and animals of the North Coast Basin are what makes this such a special place to visit, work and live. They range from grey whales cruising along the coast to a tiny fungi living inside the needle of a Douglas-fir. Learn more about the biota of the North Coast by exploring one of the seven subject areas.

The total of the North Coast Basins' living things is its biodiversity. Biodiversity usually refers to the diversity of life and all the interconnections that support these myriad forms of life. So plants, fish, wildlife, invertebrates all are part of the biodiversity in Oregon. However, here we use it to include the parts of the biota that do not fit into the other categories. Learn about some of the extensive recent work on the fungi and lichens in the Coast Range forests, the seaweeds and algae offshore, or many of the native and introduced microbes (bacteria) found in water, soils, and the ocean.
